“The Armenian Genocide as reflected in the Georgian press 1914-1918” Book Presentation

On April 20, 2011, in the venue of the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia “The Armenian Genocide as reflected in the Georgian press 1914-1918” edition was officially presented to the public. The idea of the compilation belongs to the “Armenian Community of Georgia” and the “Armenian Student Association of Georgia”, and the project was fulfilled by these organizations. The project was sponsored by the Georgian office of the European Armenian Federation (EAFJD).

This compilation contains the archive materials of the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia, stored at the Georgian press branch – all dealing with the issue of the Armenian Genocide. The aforementioned publication contains materials of three Georgian newspapers (“Sakartvelo”, “Samshoblo”, “Sakhalkho purtseli”) and the “Klde” magazine – all dealing with the issue of the Armenian Genocide.

“The main purpose of the book is to boost the effort of the scientific circles of Georgian in studying the vast materials base, that is kept at the Georgian archives, and thereby to enhance the existing picture of what is known about the Armenian Genocide” – says Aleksandr Ohanyan, one of the initiators of the book project.

The chairman of the Armenian Student Association of Georgia, Armen Aghajanov, stressed that the aim of the publication of “The Armenian Genocide as reflected in the Georgian press 1914-1918” is also to familiarize the Georgian reader with the historical fact of the Genocide, since this subject was silenced and tabooed in Georgia for several decades of years.

The preface to the publication was written by Dr. Otar Janelidze, a history professor, who underlined, that the materials presented in the publication express the attitude of the Georgian press and the Georgian society toward the tragedy that the Armenian people faced in Turkey.

The board of the Armenian Student Union of Georgia, which worked on bringing the book together, consisted of Aleksandr Ohanyan, Artur Mirzoyan, Razmik Badalyan, Gevorg Yagutov and Eduard Sahakyan, who researched the archive materials for one year, and thereafter compiled this edition.
